Maternity Photoshoot Inspiration with Bump to Blossom Gowns
There’s something really special about maternity photos when the light is soft, the location feels peaceful, and the mum-to-be feels completely beautiful in what she’s wearing. This shoot was exactly that.
I recently worked with the lovely Elly from Bump to Blossom, a luxury gown hire business for motherhood, maternity and beyond. She brought along three incredible gowns for Melanie to wear during our session, and honestly it felt like photographing a goddess at golden hour. Mel was 34 weeks pregnant, glowing in that way only women in the final stretch of pregnancy can be.
We met at the beautiful lake and beach area at Currimundi Lake just before sunset, when the light turns warm and soft and everything feels a little bit magical.
Why Golden Hour Is Perfect for Maternity Photos
If you’ve ever wondered when the best time for maternity photos is, the answer is almost always golden hour.
That soft, low sunlight is incredibly flattering and adds so much warmth and depth to images. It creates the kind of light that wraps around you gently instead of feeling harsh. For maternity sessions especially, it helps create that dreamy, glowing look that feels timeless. And on this particular evening at Currimundi Lake, the golden light showed up perfectly. At Currimundi Lake specifically, you have the ocean on one side and the lake on the other, meaning you can play with the angles of light and always have water in the background.
The First Look: Bold and Powerful
The first gown Mel wore was a deep red satin two-piece that felt incredibly powerful and striking against the soft sand. It flowed beautifully as she walked, catching the light and movement in such a dramatic way. What I loved most about this look was how confident and strong it felt — maternity photos don’t always have to be soft and delicate. They can be bold and powerful too. And Mel absolutely owned it.
The Second Look: Soft Gold Details
The second gown had the most beautiful intricate gold beading and delicate detailing. Up close it was stunning — the kind of dress that catches the light in a really magical way. For this part of the shoot we focused on capturing the quieter moments: hands resting on her belly, small movements, and the calm anticipation of meeting her baby soon. Sometimes the simplest images end up being the most meaningful.
The Third Look: Dreamy and Romantic by the Ocean
For the final look we moved closer to the shoreline where the waves were gently rolling in. This gown was soft, flowing and incredibly romantic — the kind of dress that moves beautifully with the ocean breeze. Mel walked slowly along the water as the sun dropped lower, and the light reflected off the waves behind her. It felt peaceful, calm and full of that quiet excitement that comes in the final weeks of pregnancy.
Why Hiring a Maternity Gown Can Transform Your Photos
One of the things I love about working with businesses like Bump to Blossom is how much a thoughtfully chosen gown can elevate a maternity session. During pregnancy your body is changing quickly, and it’s not always easy to find something that feels both comfortable and beautiful. Having access to a curated wardrobe of gowns designed specifically for maternity means you can choose something that makes you feel incredible without needing to buy something you’ll only wear once. And when you feel confident and comfortable, it shows in the photos.
When Is the Best Time for Maternity Photos?
For most maternity sessions, the sweet spot tends to be between 30 and 36 weeks. Your bump is beautifully round and visible, but you’re usually still feeling comfortable enough to move around and enjoy the session. Mel was 34 weeks pregnant during this shoot, which was absolutely perfect.
Capturing This Season of Life
Pregnancy is such a short season of life. It can feel long in the moment, but once your baby arrives, it suddenly feels like it flew by.
That’s why maternity photos can be so meaningful — they capture a moment that is gone in the blink of an eye.
The anticipation.
The connection.
The quiet moments before everything changes.
And when they happen in beautiful light, somewhere peaceful like Currimundi Lake, they become memories you’ll treasure forever.
