10 Reasons Mums Hire Birth Photographers
(And Why I Wish Every Mother Had These Memories)
Before I became a mum, I understood why people hired birth photographers.
After I became a mum, I truly understood.
My daughter recently turned one, and over the past few weeks I've found myself revisiting the photos and videos from the day she was born. I've watched them more times than I can count. Not because I wanted to remember what she looked like (although that part is pretty special too).
I keep going back because I wanted to remember what I looked like.
The woman who laboured.
The woman who doubted herself.
The woman who kept going.
The woman who became a mother.
Looking back now, I have never felt more in awe of myself.
Birth has a funny way of blurring in your memory. The details fade. The hours merge together. The emotions become difficult to describe.
But photographs bring you back.
If you're wondering whether birth photography is worth it, here are ten reasons so many mums choose to have their story documented.
1. Because birth is one of the most important days of your life
We photograph engagements. We photograph weddings. We photograph birthdays. But the day you become someone's mother? The day your entire world changes forever? That deserves to be remembered too.
2. Because you won't remember everything
Nobody tells you how much birth can feel like a blur afterwards. There are moments you'll remember forever. But there are also countless tiny details that disappear surprisingly quickly. The way your partner looked at you. The squeeze of a hand. The anticipation in the room before your baby arrived. The first moments before you met them. Birth photography preserves the moments your memory simply can't hold onto.
3. Because you're usually missing from the story
As mums, we're often the ones taking the photos. We're documenting everyone else's milestones while quietly disappearing from our own. Birth photography allows you to exist in the story. Not as the photographer. Not as the organiser. But as the main character.
4. Because you'll see your own strength differently
This one surprised me. When I look back at my own birth photos, I don't focus on what I looked like. I see strength. I see determination. I see resilience. I see a woman doing something incredibly powerful. The photos remind me of a version of myself I never want to forget.
5. Because your partner's experience matters too
One of the most beautiful things about birth photography is seeing the moments you miss. The nervous pacing. The tears. The pride. The way they looked at you when you weren't looking at them. Your birth story belongs to both of you.
6. Because every birth story deserves to be honoured
Whether your birth unfolds exactly as planned or takes an unexpected path, your story matters. Home birth. Hospital birth. Water birth. Induction. Caesarean birth. There is no "perfect" birth that deserves documenting more than another. Every mother deserves to have her story witnessed.
7. Because your children will treasure these photos one day
Right now, these images are for you. But one day they'll be for your child too. Imagine being able to show them the day they arrived. The anticipation. The love. The joy. The moment their life began alongside yours as a mother.
8. Because birth photography isn't what most people think it is
One of the biggest misconceptions is that birth photography is graphic. It doesn't have to be. Birth photography is about connection. Emotion. Support. Strength. Love. The images are always shared with your comfort and privacy in mind.
9. Because the transformation deserves to be documented
People often think birth photography is about the baby. And of course, the baby is part of the story. But birth photography is also about documenting a transformation. The moment you become someone's mother. The moment your family grows. The moment everything changes.
10. Because one day you'll wish you could go back
Not because you want to relive labour. But because you'll want to revisit the feeling. The anticipation. The courage. The overwhelming love. The moment before you met the person who would change your life forever.
A year later, that's what these photos have become for me. A doorway back to one of the most important days of my life. A reminder of how powerful I am. A reminder of what my body did. A reminder that even on the days motherhood feels hard, I can do hard things.
And honestly? That's worth more than I can put into words.
